Tragedy struck in the early hours of Saturday as a three-storey building under construction collapsed around Olokoro Road, Federal Low-Cost Housing Estate, Umuahia, Abia State, injuring seven people. The building came crashing down at about 3:00 a.m., destroying a nearby bungalow housing a family of seven. While no deaths were reported, several individuals—including a nursing mother and her five-month-old baby—sustained serious injuries. All victims were promptly rescued from the debris and rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention. An eyewitness and resident, Ugwumba Shedrack the building had long shown visible signs of structural failure. “This morning, we heard a loud crash around 3 a.m. The building collapsed completely. I heard it belongs to a politician. I don’t know why it was abandoned in such a dangerous condition,” he said.
