Residents of six villages in the Rabah Local Government Area of Sokoto State have called on the state government for intervention after they came under attack by suspected gunmen on Tuesday evening. It was learnt on Wednesday that the affected villages were identified as Madawa, Cirib Dikko, Cirib Sabon Gari, Quarare, Tafara, and Tukuyum, with residents calling for urgent government intervention. When contacted on Wednesday, the spokesperson for the state police command, Ahmad Rufa’i, confirmed the attacks but dismissed claims that villagers abandoned their communities. “The incident happened, and the command is on top of the situation. No villagers fled as claimed. Additional deployment was done from the headquarters,” Rufa’i told. “I am trying to see how we in the diaspora can help. These people are my people, sisters and brothers alike.” This incident is part of a fresh wave of violence that has hit the state in recent times. An attack on Tangaza Local Government Area of the state, where suspected gunmen launched an attack that left at least 15 people dead and several others injured. The gunmen stormed Kwallaijiya village in the early hours of Wednesday, firing sporadically and causing panic in the community. Residents alleged that the assault was carried out by a notorious armed group in the area known as Charambe. Following the incident, the Executive Chairman of Tangaza Local Government Council, Isa Bashir Kalanjeni, led a delegation to the village and joined locals at the mass burial of the victims.
