Gunmen have attacked members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Akwa Ibom State, dispossessing them of valuables and leaving a female corps member injured, SaharaReporters has learnt. The latest incident happened on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, at the Nigerian Christian Corpers’ Fellowship (NCCF) Family House, Urua Ekpa, along Calabar–Itu Road in Itu Local Government Area. According to victims who spoke, the armed robbers stormed the lodge in the night, carting away at least 13 mobile phones, three power banks, one laptop, and vital personal documents. One female corps member was struck with a gun during the operation and fainted. “This is the second time in less than a year that we are experiencing such a traumatising attack here,” one of the corps members said. “The last robbery happened on November 17, 2024, when three people were injured and eight phones, three laptops and four power banks were stolen. This time around, 13 phones, three power banks and a laptop were collected at gunpoint.” Another victim told that corps members have been warned against posting about such incidents on social media, a move they described as a cover-up by the Akwa Ibom State government to mask the level of insecurity in the state. “Corpers are not allowed to post anything online, but the truth is we are facing serious danger here,” the source said. The source added, “If something is not done urgently, these attacks will continue. The government is covering up insecurity, but we want the world to know what corps members are going through in their places of deployment.” Another corps member expressed frustration over government silence, saying: “The level of insecurity is too much and the government is not taking any action towards it.” The victims appealed to the Nigerian government, the NYSC authorities, and security agencies to take urgent steps to secure the lives of corps members. They insisted that the repeated attacks show that the NCCF lodge has become a soft target for criminals. The camp, which remained unfenced for years, allegedly allowed herdsmen and villagers to move in and out without authorisation, creating deep insecurity for corps members deployed there. A corps member in the camp who spoke said that while the management had downplayed the incident, many participants were unsettled by the development.
