A vigilante official was killed and another sustained gunshot injuries during a fierce gunfight between kidnappers and security operatives in the Kpaduma area of Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) on Monday evening. It was gathered that the kidnappers invaded Kpaduma around 10:47pm, attempting to abduct some residents. Alerted by gunshots, local vigilantes joined forces with anti-kidnap police operatives to confront the assailants. Meanwhile, the kidnappers reportedly abandoned their intended victims and fled after a heavy exchange of gunfire. One vigilante was killed on the spot, while another was rushed to the National Hospital, where he is receiving treatment. The FCT Police Command spokesperson, SP Adeh Josephine, confirmed that the command received a distress call around 9:15pm adding that the FCT Commissioner of Police, Saka Ajao Adewale, personally led a response team to the scene. Josephine said the kidnappers used two female residents as human shields during their escape, but the police successfully rescued the women unharmed. According to her, “And on sighting the police team, the assailants opened fire, using two female victims as human shields to escape. While the police team continued to engage them in a fierce battle and successfully rescued the two female victims unhurt." “Regrettably, two local security from the community vigilante sustained gunshot injuries. And they were immediately evacuated to the National Hospital, where one was confirmed dead by a medical doctor, while the other victim remains under medical care and is responding to treatment.” The Commissioner of Police commended the bravery of the officers and extended condolences to the family of the deceased vigilante.
