Suspected Boko Haram terrorists on Friday evening ambushed some members of the Civilian Joint Task Force and some motorists along Kirawa-Pulka road in Borno State, killing one and injuring many others. It was gathered that the incident, which occurred around 3 pm, is the latest among a series of terrorist attacks on civilians in the state. It was gathered that some victims escaped into the bush, as six of the vehicles loaded with their luggage and food items were set ablaze by the insurgents. Confirming the incident, the lawmaker representing Borno South senatorial districts, Senator Ali Ndume, in an electronic communication, described the attack as “disheartening”. He said, “It is very disheartening that I received a distress call that some armed Boko Haram terrorists laid an ambush on motorists and passengers along Kirawa-Pulka road yesterday (Friday). “The victims were escorted by a few members of the Civilian Joint Task Force, as there are no military escorts due to the dislodgement of Camerounian troops based in Kirawa last month. “Unfortunately, one of our brave Civilian Joint Task Force members was killed during an exchange of gunfire in the ambush; many victims are nowhere to be found as I speak. At least six vehicles, including two Volkswagen Golf saloon cars, a bus, and three trucks, were set ablaze during the attack,” he said The senator called on the military authorities to deploy troops to safeguard Kirawa and other surrounding communities bordering Gwoza Local Government Area and the Cameroun Republic. “Let me also appeal to the military authorities to deploy troops, even if it is a platoon, to safeguard Kirawa and its people, because my people are now living in perpetual fear since the dislodgement of Camerounian troops based in Kirawa last month,” Ndume added. He, however, sympathised with the family of the victims and prayed for the quick recovery of the wounded civilians. Local security sources in the community said the insurgents laid the ambush en masse and overpowered security operatives. “There were many, as we heard, who laid the ambush. It took a while before they finished the operation, but no deployment to curb their operation,” the source said
