Two separate fire incidents have destroyed properties worth millions of naira in Oyo State over the weekend, though no casualties were recorded. The first incident occurred on Saturday evening at a primary healthcare centre in Masifa, Idi Araba, Ogbomoso, where the solar panel room of the facility was engulfed by fire. According to the Oyo State Fire Service, officers arrived at the scene shortly after receiving a distress call at 8:55 p.m. Chairman of the Service, Maroof Akinwande, said the fire was contained before it could spread to other parts of the healthcare centre. “Our officers swiftly swung into action, and the fire was restricted from spreading to other sections of the building. No casualty was recorded and properties worth millions of naira were saved. The incident could have been caused by heated solar power batteries ignited by plugged electrical gadgets,” Akinwande said. A day later, on Sunday, another fire broke out at a plastic factory located near the General Hospital in Saki. The blaze, which started from a solar power system installed in the factory’s store, damaged plastic materials and other equipment. Akinwande confirmed that firefighters from the Saki Fire Station responded to the emergency after receiving a distress call at 12:50 p.m. “Upon arrival, we discovered that the solar power system in the store was already engulfed by fire. We curtailed the spread and saved properties worth billions of naira. The fire was traced to electrical faults from the solar system,” he said. Both incidents highlight recurring fire risks linked to faulty or overheated solar installations in the state.
