Barely six years after a major fire destroyed the Oba Market in Benin City, another fire broke out at the popular market late Wednesday night. The market, which is still under reconstruction following the June 2020 inferno, was reportedly ignited by a solar panel. Chairman of Oredo Local Council, Gabriel Iduseri, who visited the scene yesterday, confirmed that only one shop was affected. He said firefighters and security operatives responded swiftly to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to other sections of the market. Iduseri said traders would no longer be allowed to install solar panels inside the market to avert future fire incidents. “We have learned that a solar panel caused the fire. We will cease the installation of solar panels and inspect all electrical wiring in the market. I want to assure everyone that we will assist the affected trader in resuming business. Thankfully, there was minimal damage and no lives were lost. Oredo Local Council was present and we have implemented measures to prevent thefts,” he said. The affected trader was reported to have collapsed following the incident.
