A carpenter identified simply as Ovoke has been shot dead in a suspected cult attack in the Warri area of Delta State. It was learnt that the incident occurred on October 23. It was gathered that the killing was a reprisal after a man identified simply as Ghenero was stabbed to death on October 12 during a fight over a debt in the Iyara area of the state. It had earlier reported that there was a disagreement between Ghenero and an acquaintance who accused him of owing money from a business deal. The suspect, accompanied by his friend, reportedly confronted the deceased at his residence to demand payment. The confrontation degenerated into a fight, during which Ghenero was stabbed and later died. A police source who spoke on Tuesday on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak on the matter said Ovoke was shot dead at the McIver Market area of Warri. He said, “The deceased was attacked and shot dead at McIver in Warri. The incident happened at night and is believed to be connected to the killing of one Ghenero in Iyara.” Ovoke was seen begging for his life before being shot in the head. It was also noted that Ovoke’s girlfriend was hit by a bullet during the attack. “During the shooting, Ovoke’s girlfriend was also hit by a bullet in her lap and was rushed to the hospital, where she is receiving treatment. Ovoke was killed in the same area where the Vikings killed the son of an army officer. He was said to be a carpenter who also sold wooden chairs in the area,” the platform disclosed. In recent weeks, suspected cult attacks have left several young men dead and many others injured. The Delta State Police Command, however, confirmed that there had been cases of cult-related activities in the area. When contacted on Saturday, the command’s spokesperson, Bright Edafe, said, “The incident is related to cases of cult attacks that happened in Warri recently. That is the only place we have recorded such attacks lately. Investigation is ongoing.”
